Blobwork: A Vision of Contemporary Art Practice

Blobwork: A Vision of Contemporary Art Practice is an exposition of a pragmatic methodology for an art practice that aims to unleash artists’ capability to realize their greatest creative potential in proposing alternatives to current realities. The methodology is grounded in a reconceptualization of the ways we engage with, understand, and produce art, that departs from the traditional art-as-object view, i.e. that art itself is always instantiated by some object, whether it is a performance, a painting, a sculpture, and so on. The blob is a methodology that de-isolates art from our lived experience, reconceptualizes art in a non-objectified way, and develops tools to make art genuinely transformative rather than a complementary or preservative of oppressive and instrumentalizing social institutions. In the diagram visible in this image, I illustrate the three major components of the practice: (1) the blob is democratic, (2) the blob is radically open, and (3) the blob is alive.
